Gyeonggi Climate Satellite successfully launched in US… Settles into orbit aboard SpaceX Rocket

Successful Launch: Gyeonggi Province’s climate satellite, the ‘GYEONGGISat-1’, which is the first such project by a local government in South Korea, was successfully launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from California, US, and settled into its target orbit.

Mission: The 25kg microsatellite, an optical satellite, is equipped with a high-resolution multispectral payload to precisely detect changes in Gyeonggi’s urban areas and ecosystems. Its mission includes monitoring damage from natural disasters like floods and wildfires, as well as changes in vegetation and land cover, to advance the province’s climate policies.

Future Plans: Gyeonggi Climate Satellites 2 and 3 are scheduled for sequential launches next year and in 2027. These subsequent satellites will be equipped with instruments to measure greenhouse gas concentrations, such as methane and carbon dioxide.
